life-threatening injuries. act the fire chief paul crawford described those injuries. >> a lot of broken legs, open fractures, broken legs, head injuries, the two criticals were head injuries back injuries. >> reporter: according to police, the drive hill two other cars before hitting the bus stop -- the driver hit two other cars before hitting the bus stop. >> it hit a car legally stocked on stockton and somehow that vehicle veered and hit another vehicle and then subsequently hit the muni structure. >> reporter: police don't know why the driver did this today. they also say that this part of stockton is going to be closed for probably another hour while they investigate. live in san francisco, melissa caen, kpix 5. another developing story today. a wild shootout at 5th street

off-ramp on i-80 around noontime. susie steimle was nearby working for story as the shots rang out. >> reporter: i clearly heard gunshots across the street from where i was standing. you will hear in the video in a moment shots fired and my camera shakes when i realize what's happening. it's a case where we were a lot closer than we would like to be to the start of a story. [ gunfire ] >> reporter: our cameras were rolling when the gunshots erupted. we were covering a story about homelessness when two gunmen opened fire on the off-ramp of i-80 westbound near 5th and harrison. [ gunfire ] >> all hell broke loose. it was multiple gunshots, and i heard my car get hit with a bullet. so i immediately got down. >> reporter: he was in the middle of the shootout. his car is one of three struck by stray bullets. all he could think was -- >> i was in the middle of a war zone. >> reporter: looking at the other two vehicles, it's lucky no bystanders were hurt. police don't know if the shooters were injured as both took off. witnesses report hearing at least 20 shots fired and two

separate shootings within minutes of each other. >> it's an onset i heard about six gunshots and then in the big gun battle there was at least 24 if not more gunshots. >> reporter: silver is one of dozens forced to duck behind their steering wheels for fear of being hit. >> don't expect it. in fact, i think the guys that did it are idiots for initiating something like that in the place that they did. >> reporter: chp is currently investigating. they interviewed multiple eyewitnesses who saw this from their cars. i was also interviewed because i saw this gunman from across the street. >> that's probably the last thing you had on your mind today when you went out with a camera. you're sit there is work a story about homeless people and, um, all of a sudden you hear the gunfire. what's going through your head? >> we're on crime scenes every day but not at the start of it. i was obviously very scared. i was looking down at my camera, my viewfinder and i heard it and i thought there's no way that those are gunshots and then i looked up and i clearly saw the shooter and i ran and hid. >> it's amazing we when we talk

about shootings, we talk about this every day, but when you're out on the streets you hear it for the first time you don't think it's gunfire, you think it's a car backfiring or fireworks. >> i was going back and person of being a reporter and a witness. we have the clip for you of the gunshots going off in my camera you'll see it clearly shaking. >> that's -- well, you did the right thing. you took cover. the gentleman who was hit by stray gunfire was not hit, his car was struck but it could have been worse. >> it's lucky mow bystanders myself included -- no bystanders myself included were not hurt. >> you kept your cool. thank you. the fbi and cia agree the head of those agencies say russian hackers tried to interfere with the u.s. election. with the goal of helping donald trump. cbs reporter michelle [ non- english name ] on what the president had to say about it at his final news conference today. >> reporter: president obama

wasted little time in declaring russia a threat to american interests! >> the relationship between us and russia has deteriorated, uhm, sadly, significantly over the last several years. >> reporter: the president first confronted russian president vladimir putin about russia's u.s. election hacking during the g20 summit this past september and promised to strike back. >> our goal continues to be to send a clear message to russia or others not to do this to us because we can do stuff you to you. >> reporter: president obama says he will not reveal what actions the u.s. will take against russia. >> part of why, um, the russians have been effective on this is because they don't go around announcing at what they're doing. >> reporter: the president also blamed republicans for not speaking out against president- elect trump's praise of putin because they were more concerned about winning an election. >> over a third of republican voters -- [ pause ] >> -- approve every vladimir putin the former head of the

kgb. ronald reagan would roll over in his grave. >> reporter: and he said america will be vulnerable to further attacks as long as people put partisan politics ahead of american "values." cbs news, the white house. i'm sorry, what's going on? >> somebody's not feeling good. >> um -- >> the news conference briefly interrupted today when a woman passed out in the back of the room. the president called for his physician to be brought in any event the woman was revived. meanwhile, president-elect donald trump is dismissing reports that the russians played a role in his election win. this is a live look at mr. trump's last thank you tour stop in orlando. he is about to take the stage. in a tweet last night he asked why the white house waited until after the election to ask on the russian interference. before the rally politico reported president-elect trump attended two different invitation-only fundraisers including a $35,000 a head

dinner for the rnc. a massive junkyard fire burns hundreds of cars and sends choking black smoke over a richmond neighborhood. this one broke out this morning on west gertrude avenue right next to the richmond parkway. people in the area told to shelledder in place while crews work for hours to douse the flames. da lin on the firefight and the health threat. >> reporter: roughly 250 junk cars at an auto wrecking yard went up in flames. the thick black smoke could be seen for miles away. closer to the scene, multiple large explosions likely caused by the burning tires. >> i woke up to a big boom. >> reporter: massive response from firefighters by the time they arrived around 7:30 this morning, flames were already burning out of control. >> very scary. praying the whole time. the first thing did i was pull my car out the garage though and got ready to go. >> reporter: instead of water,

firefighters sprayed foam to keep the flames from spreading. >> the foam smothers the fire, suppresses the fire. it separates from the fuel from the oxygen so it doesn't ignite. >> reporter: this fire smelled like burning rubber making it hard for people to breathe. >> smells toxic. >> air is thick so, you know, i'm gonna get out of here. >> reporter: the wrecking yard is next to hundreds of homes. the smoke was so intense, firefighters ordered nearby schools and neighbors to "shelter in place" for a few hours. >> i do have my inhaler with me but i need to get home and close my windows up. >> you feel it in your chest. you feel it in your eyes. and, um, it just is very scary. >> i have watery eyes right about now. >> reporter: it took firefighters a few hours to put out the flames. and this is what's left. they say the fire started inside a junk car. they are investigating how. they believe this is an accidental fire. in richmond, i'm da lin, kpix 5.

new at 5:00 a defiant uber says its self-driving cars are still taking passengers in san francisco. that's even though state regulators have ordered uber to stop. just this afternoon, an uber vice president said the cars are no different from tesla's with the autopilot feature. >> our vehicles are just like the tesla's where there is still the technology is not capable of driving without a person at the control or a human operator. as long as that's the case you're not autonomous vehicles. >> the company says the dmv has still not explained when a car becomes fully autonomous and requires a separate permit. uber launched the self-driving service in san francisco through days go. the dmv has threatened to take uber to court. here's a live look outside from oakland. it is 50 degrees now and it's about to get a lot chillier. >> let's get right over to our kpix 5's emily turner who is in for chief meteorologist paul deanno. >> reporter: it is going to get

much cooler especially in the overnight hours. so everybody needs to bundle up maybe even bundle up your plants, your pipes, make sure your pets are inside because we have a freeze warning in the inland areas and a frost advisory in the coastal areas as well as those areas along the bay. not only tonight from midnight until 8 a.m. but also saturday night so this whole weekend. inland in the 20s to low 30s. the coast and bay area's 30s to low 40s. so again make sure that you protect your plants, pipes and your pets and your people. because look at these temperatures. our overnight lows are really chilly. santa rosa 28. 30 concord. not quite as cold around the bay or at the coast. 42 in san francisco. 39 in oakland. 38 in pacifica. so overnight we are going to get into those really chilly temperatures. the rest of the weekend is going to be sunny but also chilly. coming up i'll tell you how

bundled up you need to be for your weekend plans. communities all around the bay area are cleaning up after yesterday's storm flooded roads and wind toppled trees. kpix 5's maria medina reports while some people were ready for the storm, others got a rude awakening. >> reporter: for most of us it's business as usual but for some of us, last night's storm was unforgettable. from mudslides to downed trees, yesterday's storm left a mark throughout some parts of the bay area. >> it was raining buckets all day it lived up to the hype. >> reporter: he called santa cruz county home for four decades. he says this is nothing new on bear creek road during heavy rains. >> this has been productive for a while. they will have to fix it. >> exciting stuff here, right? >> you bet. just typical day in the mountains. >> reporter: but this wasn't expected for the man who owns

not one but both the cars under this massive tree that toppled over in east palo alto just after 10:00 last night. a few hours later this tree buckled and crashed on top of a home in portola valley leaving the person inside scrambling to look for a place to stay. it's also a wake-up call to prepare for the worst. >> it looks like we're in for a year. >> reporter: no one was hurt in the incidents and also want to mention that the car owner in east palo alto has insurance. at the summit, maria medina, kpix 5. a man is back on solid ground after falling down a steep cliff in san francisco. rescuers battled strong winds and wet conditions to pull him about 100 feet up at about 1 a.m. the man was clinging to a rock and yelling for help in the seacliff area. someone called 911 and it took firefighters about an hour to get him to safety. it's not clear how he fell. the man walked away with minor

injuries. the rain may be to blame for two boats sinking in san francisco bay. chopper 5 spotted the boats in the waters off sausalito and berkeley. the coast guard had sent its helicopters to look for victims. but then determined that both vessels were empty when they went down. ♪[ music ] a not so gentle package delivery to a bay area family. the delivery fail caught on camera coming up. >> plus, talk about a survival story. two college students stranded on a snowy mountaintop in blizzard conditions for two days. >> and why santa was just in san francisco swimming with fish. ,,

for a delivery, you won't like this. a u.p.s. driver making a delivery. the homeowners knew something was wrong when they found their dumped delivery. consumerwatch reporter julie watts on the reaction, um, and their explanation from u.p.s. >> reporter: it's a delivery that could have been handled a lot better. a u.p.s. worker has their hands full and tries to open the gate outside a home in vallejo. when she can't, she drops the packages over a wall and on to the wet ground then walks away. >> i was in shock! i was absolutely appalled. >> reporter: this homeowner says at first she couldn't figure out why the boxes were left there, then she and her husband checked their security system. >> it's not right to just dump people's packages over a wall especially marked as fragile. if we have access to our front door deliver them to the front door where it's a covered awning. >> reporter: a sign on the gate may have played a role. it says, no soliciting.

keep gate closed. but she says that hasn't stopped other delivery people from coming in. >> their excuse was it was an 18-year-old hired off the streets. >> reporter: it's not the first time a driver has dropped a package but u.p.s. says incidents like this are actually extremely rare. the company delivers about 700 million packages during the holiday season. >> she could have set them down, tried to open the gate, but she didn't do that. >> reporter: still, brisco says that's no excuse. while nothing was broken, she says the contents were wet and the driver should have made a better effort. now, u.p.s. tells us that it emphasizes delivery care to all drivers and seasonal helpers and to, quote, prompt action to contact the customer and address the workers' behavior and retraining for proper delivery methods. u.p.s. says it did offer to inspect and replace those items with next day shipping which the briscos declined. julie watts, kpix 5. the other package problem this time of year people stealing them off of porches

many times. these three are among six people arrested by santa clara county deputies for stealing packages. among the items recovered, dozens of gifts swiped from a u.p.s. storage facility. investigators put those packages on display and offered some advice. have your gift delivered to your office or a neighbor's house or request having your package held up at a pickup facility. a santa rosa couple is facing charges for targeting teachers in a credit card theft operation. sonoma county sheriff's deputies say 8 schools in santa rosa and rohnert park were hit. the thieves would swipe the cards from purses and wallets when the teachers left the classroom. the crooks have a child attending one of the schools. dating website eharmony is

nixing their lengthy questionnaire. before use hers to answer up to 150 personal questions. -- users had to answer up to 150 personal questions. they will still have to answer a few questions but the new process should take no more than 10 minutes. stranded in blizzard conditions. two college students now have a story of survival. they were plucked from a snowy mountaintop in new york. madison and her boyfriend blake are experienced hikers, they say. their climb started out fine. but then they got trapped in a snow bank. rescue crews searched for them for two days in four feet of snow. by then the hikers had started hallucinating until they heard this. [ helicopter ] >> i said, do you hear that? he said, yeah. we both started screaming. the first thing i can remember just him saying that we're going to make it out of here. >> blake is still in the hospital and could lose some toes to frostbite. madison has frostbite on her feet, as well. and her teeth may actually be cracked from days of violently

have been feeling today. right behind it a high pressure system is moving in over the weekend bringing with it clear skies and cooler temperatures. futurecast is moving in overnight. not a lot happening. these are clear skies overnight. this is 6:00 in the morning tomorrow. watch what happens going through saturday day. there's not a cloud there to keep those warmer temperatures from the daytime in which means it's going to be very, very chilly. the overall story going into the weekend is this. it's going to be a cold night the evening is going to be breezy. it will start to peter out overnight. it's going to stay chilly this weekend and remain dry. it's going to dry out for now. high temperatures, cold but beautiful. 53 in the north bay. 49 in pacifica. inland, 50 in livermore, 51 in fairfield. around the bay a little bit warmer 53 degrees in oakland.
